UdK & TU BERLIN
A rare coincidence enabled this team to come together. Two radically different universities share one campus, yet unfortunately not much more. The technical students are not invited to the art parties. The arty students… oh well. Anyway, the UdK (Universität der Künste Berlin — Berlin University of the Arts) and the TU (Technische Universität Berlin — Berlin Institute of Technology) live next door on Campus Charlottenburg, and students need to make use of that amazing opportunity and get together!
Out of experience we believe that no technical element can sensibly function if one does not integrate visual, communicative, usability aspects into the development process. In turn, architecture that looks good on paper but cannot be realised, would need inefficient or inexistent systems is pipe-dream-architecture. The way out of this? Pier Luigi Nervi, a studied civil engineer and architect, once proposed to at least unify some parts of the different curricula. Not many heard his voice (and it was not because he spoke Italian!). One humble way we propose is for students to take the lead, form a team and win the Solar Decathlon with a proposal which — we hope — makes sense in its entirety: architecturally, technically and economically.
